Primal Nature in General
- Ancient Forest International - AFI
works to protect primary forests, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and
in Chile, which harbor some of the few remaining large temperate
rainforests. The web site describes the work and the forests.
- Forest
Conservation Portal - The mission of Forests.org is to contribute to ending deforestation,
preservation of old-growth forests, conservation management of secondary
forests, and commencement of the age of forest restoration.
- Greenpeace - Protecting ancient
forests is one of Greenpeace's major campaigns. The web site of
Greenpeace International. describes the campaign region by region and
provides links to Greenpeace reports and to national Greenpeace
sites.
- Natural
Resources Defense Council - NRDC's multi-faceted program includes
research, lawsuits, and public education aimed at protecting natural areas
and wildlife. Its BioGems program
is attempting to save a dozen areas, many of them examples of primal nature,
in North and South America.
- The Nature
Conservancy - The Conservancy is a U.S.-based organization working to
preserve ecologically important lands across the globe. Protective measures
vary with the site. The Conservancy owns "pristine" lands not
subject to active management; it also owns "working lands" from
which resources are extracted.
- Old-Growth
Forests of Western Australia - The Western Australian Forest Alliance
presents a series of questions and answers on old growth in general and old
growth in Western Australian in particular.Russian
Old-Growth Forests - The Forest Club, an informal working group composed
of representatives from the largest Russian non-governmental organizations
working actively for Russian forest conservation, provide background
information and news on Russian old growth.
- Rainforest Action
Network - RAN works to save forests and their inhabitants around the
world by transforming the global marketplace through education, grassroots
organizing, and nonviolent direction action.
- Rewilding
Institute - The institute's Web site provides essential information on
"the integration of traditional wildlife and wildlands conservation
with conservation biology to advance landscape-scale conservation."
- Taiga
Rescue Network - The Taiga Rescue Network, made up of two hundred
organizations working to preserve the taiga (boreal forest) and to assist
its people, furnishes information and opportunities for action.
- The
Trees of Bialowieza Forest - Tomasz Niechoda chronicles
the lives of ancient trees in Poland's Bialowieza Forest, the largest
remaining deciduous old-growth forest in northern Europe.
Old Growth in Eastern North America
- The Adirondack Council - Protects
the ecological integrity and wilderness character of New York's Adirondack
Park, which includes extensive areas of never-logged forest.
- Ancient
Cross Timbers Project The Ancient Cross Timbers Project is a
project of the University of Arkansas Tree Ring Laboratory, dedicated to
studying and preserving ancient Cross Timbers forest in central Texas,
Oklahoma, and southeastern Kansas.
- Ancient
Forest Education and Research. This non-profit organization carries
out research and disseminates information on old growth and ancient forests in
Ontario.
- Boreal
Forest Network - The North American affiliate of the Taiga Rescue
Network (see above), the Boreal Forest Network is based on Canada but works
to preserve forests in Alaska as
well as in Canada.
- Buckeye
Forest Council - The mission of the Buckeye Forest Council is to protect
Ohio's native forests and their inhabitants through education, advocacy, and
organizing. Saving Dysart Woods, an old-growth forest, is one of its
three major campaigns.
- Canadian
Boreal Initiative - The Initiative is a coalition of conservationists, First Nations, and industry,
which has proposed a Boreal Forest Conservation Framework, preserving half
of the boreal unloged and allowing sustainable logging on the other half.
- Chattooga
Conservancy - On its web site the Chattooga Conservancy presents a
Chattooga Watershed Conservation Plan, which includes the preservation of
old-growth forest. A map shows the location of old growth.
- Clint
Farlinger Photographer . Clint Farlinger, a professional
photographer who has worked on a pro bono basis for organizations working to
save old growth, here displays a selection of his old-growth
photographs.
- Department
of Environmental and Plant Biology, Ohio University - Presents Dysart
Woods, a 50-acre site of old-growth mixed mesophytic forest in Belmont County,
Ohio.
- Division of Natural Areas, Eastern
Kentucky University - Includes a gallery of photographs of Lilley Cornett
Woods, an old-growth mixed mesophytic forest of approximately 260 acres in
southeastern Kentucky; and links to numerous Web sites helpful for research on
forests and biodiversity.
- Eastern
Native Tree Society - The Eastern Native
Tree Society (ENTS) is a cyberspace interest group devoted to the celebration
of trees of the eastern United States through art, poetry, music, mythology,
science, medicine, and wood crafts. ENTS is also intended as an archive for
information on specific trees and stands of trees.
- The
500-Year Forest Foundation. The foundation is "dedicated to the
creation of future ancient forests." Members and friends also work to
identify and protect present-day old growth.
- Friends of
Allegheny Wilderness - The Friends work to make wilderness protection a
priority in the stewardship of Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest,
including its extensive old growth.
- Highlands Nature
Sanctuary. The Sanctuary has as its mission uniting forest fragments
in southern Ohio to restore a large contiguous block of native old-growth
forest. Its 1700 acres of holdings include old-growth
remnants.
- Kentucky
Heartwood. Learning about and helping to preserve Kentucky's old-growth
forest is one of the priorities of this activist organization.
- Kentucky Natural
Lands Trust - The Lands Trust provides information on Blanton Forest,
2350 acres of old growth, which it stewards.
- Manomet
Center for Conservation Sciences - Manomet conducts original research on
natural systems and wildlife in the Northeastern United States.
- Northeast Wilderness Trust.
Northeast Wilderness Trust is a regional land trust working, through
conservation easements and land acquisition, to preserve forests to become
future old growth.
- The North Mountain Old Forest
Society The society's mission is the restoration and conservation of
old-growth forests on private land in Nova Scotia.
- Nova Scotia
Ecology Action Centre - The Center focuses on protecting public lands.
Most lands that they are proposing for protection include old or
potential/future old-growth Acadian forest.
- Nova Scotia Nature
Trust. Preservation of remnants of old-growth forest is among the
Nature Trust's projects.
- Ohio Division of Natural
Areas and Preserves - On its web site the division includes descriptions of
such old-growth sites as Heuston
Woods and Johnson Woods State Nature Preserves.
- Old
List East. Lists the maximum ages of tree species in eastern North
America.
- Ontario's
Old-Growth Forests. A companion to the book Ontario's
Old-Growth Forests by Michael Henry and Peter Quinby, the site will list
updates to the book and invites reports on newly discovered old growth.
- Penn's Woods:
An Auto Tour of Old-Growth Forests. Pennsylvania's Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources presents information on selected existing
old-growth and second-growth sites in Pennsylvania.
- Primal
Forests - Ancient Trees Community. A networking site created by Ed
Frank and devoted to all facets of the forests of eastern North America,
including poetry and legends.
- Terra
Galleria. This site presents a wide selection of the photographs
of nature photographer Quang-Tuan Luong, including a spectacular set of
pictures of Congaree National Park, taken in 2006.
- Terra--The
Earth Renewal and Restoration Alliance - The Terra site, at the web
address of the former Champion Tree Project, features old-growth sites in
New York State.
- Western
Kentucky University Bioweb - Professor Albert Meier has posted a
portfolio of photographs of old growth.
- Wild South
- Wild South is a grassroots forest protection organization, headquartered
in Alabama. It has worked to impact forest policy and management in the
southeast since 1991.
- Western North
Carolina Alliance - WCNA is a grassroots environmental organization,
which addresses issues critical to its mountain communities, including the
preservation of old-growth forest.
- The White Pine Society - 98%
of Minnesota's White Pines are gone. We must manage the last 2% sustainably.
